Major League Soccer was back in full swing last weekend! It was a weekend in which a lot of the early season trends were broken. Unfortunately for us, in last week’s article I told everyone to keep betting on early season trends and my picks went 1-2. Saturday was tough because FC Cincinnati finally came back to earth after their red-hot start and New England Revolution got their first win and covered the spread by only a half goal. We were able to get a nice win on Sunday in the LA Galaxy game as they beat the Portland Timbers with two goals from Zlatan Ibrahimović. On the season we are now 3-5-1. We learn more and more about the league each week and surely that will lead to better picks. Hopefully that starts this week with my Week 6 MLS best bets!
LA Galaxy (Pick) vs Vancouver Whitecaps
Last week we won when we bet on the LA Galaxy to beat the Portland Timbers -1/2 goal. The Galaxy were able to get a win thanks to the return of their superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović. He won and converted two penalty kicks against the Timbers and won the game for LA almost singlehandedly. There was a lot of speculation that Zlatan would not make the trip up to Vancouver for tonight’s game because of Vancouver’s turf field and the impact that might have on his knee. This has impacted the line on this game, shifting it down to a pick em on most sights. As of right now it looks like Zlatan will play so get those bets on the Galaxy in before the line goes back up. Vancouver has yet to win a game this season, so I would take the Galaxy either way!
Seattle Sounders (-1) vs Real Salt Lake
The Seattle Sounders are once again one of the top teams in MLS. In the young season they are only three points behind LAFC for the top spot in the league with a game in hand. Their home field advantage has always been strong, and this season is no different. In their first two home games, Seattle has won 4-1 and 2-0. This Saturday Real Salt Lake is in town and they have struggled to start the year, particularly on the road. These road struggles were highlighted by a 5-0 drumming in Washington DC a few weeks back. The Sounders have the potential to blowout Real Salt Lake and I think in a prime time game at home they will. The spread is currently -1 and I think they can certainly cover that.
Sporting Kansas City (+1/2) vs FC Cincinnati
Last week FC Cincinnati came back to earth. They really broke on to the scene to start the year. They had a draw and two back to back wins before they lost their first home game last week to a poor Philadelphia Union side. I think this is going to be the start of a slump for FC Cincinnati. The initial excitement of their first season in MLS has started to ware off and they will start to settle into the league. The home field advantage they had in the first game won’t be as strong as the season goes on and Sporting Kansas City are off to a good start in the MLS. In their last MLS match they beat Montreal 7 to 1 and their only road loss was to the top team in MLS right now LAFC. When Philadelphia Union came to Kansas City, Sporting Kansas City beat them 2-0. I believe that SKC is at least good enough to get a draw in Cincinnati.
