Week Five College Football Importance Guide (Ranking All 58 Games)

  1. TENNESSEE STATE @ VANDERBILT

Tennessee State is 2-0 on the FCS level but they’ve also had two games cancelled due to weather. Vanderbilt is 2-2 and looking for a nice rebound win against a FCS opponent.

  1. LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE @ ALABAMA

Louisiana Lafayette is 1-2 this season with their lone win coming against a FCS. They lost by 46 to Mississippi State and also lost to Coastal Carolina. Alabama is Alabama. This game is absolute shit.

  1. BOWLING GREEN @ GEORGIA TECH

Bowling Green is 1-3 and their lone win was against a average FCS team who gave the Falcons all they could handle. Georgia Tech is 1-3 with their lone win being a blowout win over Alcorn State.

  1. RICE @ WAKE FOREST

Rice is 1-3 with their lone victory being a 3 point win over Prairie View. Wake Forest is fresh off a assbeating from Notre Dame which led to Wake firing their defensive coordinator. Must win game for the Demon Deacons.

  1. ARKANSAS PINE BLUFF @ FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL

Arkansas Pine Bluff is 1-3 on the FCS level and is just absolute dog shit. They gave up yes 90 points to South Dakota State and lost by 84 points. Florida International is 2-2 with both their losses coming to power 5 schools (Indiana, Miami). This game has blowout city all over it.

  1. UTEP @ UTSA

UTEP is winless and haven’t won a football game since 2016. UTSA is 1-3 but it’s a misleading 1-3 since their 3 losses were all to power 5 teams (Arizona State, Kansas State & Baylor). UTEP might be able to keep it close but UTSA should get this one.

  1. OREGON STATE @ ARIZONA STATE

Oregon State is just 1-3 and despite the offense being somewhat decent the defense is just god awful. Arizona State is 2-2 but Herman Edwards has really impressed me with the way the Sun Devils play up front. This Sun Devil team could be a sleeper to play in the PAC 12 Championship.

  1. TENNESSEE @ GEORGIA

Out of all the power 5 schools with exception to maybe Rutgers the Vols have the worst offense I’ve seen. Georgia has one of the nations best defenses. See the problem here? Years ago this would of been a good conference game. Tennessee hasn’t won a conference game since 2016.

  1. HOUSTON BAPTIST @ SMU

Houston Baptist is 1-2 on the FCS level and well they’re just not very good. SMU is 1-3 and coming off a huge win against Navy. The Mustangs need this game if they want any shot at bowling this year. SMU wins this one big.

  1. SOUTH ALABAMA @ APPALACHIAN STATE

South Alabama is 1-3 overall but 1-0 in the Sun Belt. Appalachian State is just 2-1 due to a cancelled game as a result of the hurricane. The Mountaineers could easily be 3-0 here if they had just a little bit of luck. App State rolls big in Boone.

  1. ARKANSAS VS TEXAS A&M

Arkansas is just 1-3 with their lone win being against a FCS opponent. Last week they actually outgained Auburn but lost the game. Texas A&M is 2-2 but their 2 losses are to Clemson and Alabama. I expect A&M to handle things in Jerry’s world.

  1. SOUTHERN MISS @ AUBURN

Southern Miss is 2-1 since their game at App State was cancelled due to the hurricane. Auburn is 3-1 and about to buckle down to SEC play so the Tigers need this game. Auburn rolls in this one.

  1. CENTRAL MICHIGAN @ MICHIGAN STATE

Central Michigan is just 1-3 with their one victory being against FCS opponent Maine. Maine is good FCS though who had already knocked off Western Kentucky of the FBS. Michigan State is 2-1 and came up with a huge victory at Indiana.

  1. BAYLOR @ OKLAHOMA

Oklahoma took Army way to lightly last week and they almost got a L. If they do that to Baylor perhaps they will have an L. The Sooners are undefeated but haven’t looked great the past 2 weeks. Baylor is 3-1 with their only loss coming to Duke who happens to be undefeated.

  1. CHARLOTTE @ UAB

Charlotte is 2-2 on the year and 1-0 in Conference play so this is a big game for the 49ers. UAB is 2-1 and is 2-0 in Conference play. The Blazers should roll big in this one.

  1. HAWAII @ SAN JOSE STATE

Hawaii is 4-1 and have been one of the best stories of the College Football season for me. San Jose State is 0-3 including a loss to a FCS UC Davis. Hawaii should roll in this one and move to an amazing 5-1.

  1. LOUISIANA MONROE @ GEORGIA STATE

Louisiana Monroe is 2-2 and looking for a bowl game this season. Georgia State is 1-3 and well if they want any chance at a bowl game they need to find a way to win this game. This should be a good one.

  1. KENT STATE @ BALL STATE

Kent State may be 1-3 but I’ve been impressed with the offensive development from a year ago. Plus their losses are all on the road at Illinois, Penn State & Ole Miss. Ball State has been somewhat impressive too despite being 1-3 only losing at Notre Dame by 8. This should be a good one.

  1. LIBERTY @ NEW MEXICO

The Liberty Flames are just 1-2 and well they could sure use this one. New Mexico is 2-1 and looking to move another inch closer to a bowl game. New Mexico should handle things at home but don’t sleep on Turner Gil and these Flames.

  1. COASTAL CAROLINA @ TROY

One of the other slept on stories so far is Coastal Carolina. They didn’t have their head coach all of last season because of health problems and their win total for over/under was set at 3 this year. Coastal Carolina is already 3-1 with the lone loss coming at South Carolina. Troy is a Sun Belt powerhouse who’s also 3-1 with a nice power 5 win at Nebraska. This should be a fun one.

  1. CINCINNATI @ UCONN

Cincinnati showed a ton of heart last week and for that they still remain unbeaten and a great story in the college football season thus far. Uconn is still in rebuilding mode after just a 1-3 start. Cincy should roll in this.

  1. INDIANA @ RUTGERS

Rutgers has been a major disappointment this year. Especially on the defensive side of the ball. Indiana has been somewhat of a surprise going 3-1 and looking to be a tough out for the Big 10 heavyweights. Indiana rolls.

  1. OKLAHOMA STATE @ KANSAS

Oklahoma State is 3-1 and coming off a tough home loss to Texas Tech. Kansas is well 2-2 and that’s amazing considering they haven’t been .500 in some time. The Jayhawks might even have bowl game on their mind if they can pull some sort of upset off this week. This could be closer than the experts think.

  1. OLD DOMINION @ EAST CAROLINA

Old Dominion is coming off their programs biggest victory against Virginia Tech. Sure, their just 1-3 but they’re 1-0 after the QB change and now perhaps they have a bit of life. East Carolina is 1-2 but is playing much better on the defensive side of the ball this year. This should be a close one.

  1. UMASS @ OHIO

Ohio had their hearts broken last week after just a terrible series of events that left the Bobcats with a loss at rival Cincinnati. Ohio is 1-2 and is in need of a big win. Umass is 2-3 and wants to get to .500 this one should be a fun one.

  1. NEVADA @ AIR FORCE

Nevada is 2-2 and fresh off a road loss to Toledo. Air Force is 1-2 and in desperate need a win. This should be a good ole mountain west matchup with both teams needing the W.

  1. ARMY @ BUFFALO

Both these teams are playing good football. Army is just 2-2 but their losses were to Duke and Oklahoma and they took Oklahoma to overtime in Norman! Buffalo is 4-0 with nice road wins at Temple and Rutgers. I’m excited to watch this one come Saturday.

  1. WESTERN MICHIGAN @ MIAMI (OH)

Western Michigan is 2-2 and coming off a nice road win at Georgia State. Miami (OH) is just 1-3 but their losses are to Minnesota, Cincinnati and Marshall. 3 pretty good football teams. This one should be a good one.

  1. FLORIDA ATLANTIC @ MIDDLE TENNESSEE

Florida Atlantic is just 2-2 but both their losses were on the road at Oklahoma and Central Florida. Middle Tennessee is 1-2 with both their losses being to SEC teams (Vandy and Georgia). Still I like FAU to find a way to roll in this one.

  1. MARSHALL @ WESTERN KENTUCKY

Marshall is 2-1 and coming off a loss to NC State. Western Kentucky is just 1-3 but have played much better the past 2 weeks just barely losing to Louisville and beating Ball State on the road. This is somewhat of a rivalry matchup and those are always fun.

  1. TEMPLE @ BOSTON COLLEGE

Temple is a tough team to get a read on. They start out 0-2 losing to Villanova from the FCS and Buffalo from the MAC then go on the road and beat Maryland from the Big 10 and Tulsa in a conference game and suddenly the Owls look like a tough out. BC was looking great this year until last weeks road game at Purdue.

  1. MEMPHIS @ TULANE

Memphis hasn’t lost a step at 3-1 this season and looking at another big year in the American. Tulane is just 1-3 and has been a big let down for me considering they lost two close games against Wake Forest and UAB. If Tulane wants to salvage their season they need to come up with a big upset here.

  1. UCLA @ COLORADO

Colorado has been somewhat flying under the radar but now comes conference play. UCLA is in for a long season but perhaps Chip Kelly can work some magic and pull off an upset somewhere. This one should be fun.

  1. NORTHERN ILLINOIS @ EASTERN MICHIGAN

Northern Illinois is just 1-3 but those losses were to Iowa, Utah and Florida State so as conference play begins I expect NIU to become a player. Eastern Michigan is 2-2 with tough losses to Buffalo and San Diego State. This is gigantic game for EMU since they already have one MAC loss.

  1. BOISE STATE @ WYOMING

Boise State is 3-1 and for the past couple seasons the Mountain West team that has gave them the most trouble has been the Wyoming Cowboys. Wyoming is 2-2 and looking for a nice home upset.

  1. OLE MISS @ LSU

Ole Miss didn’t look great the past 2 weeks with the 62-7 home loss to Alabama followed by a rather close game win against Kent State from the MAC. Meanwhile LSU looks like a team that could really be a player in the SEC this year.

  1. SYRACUSE @ CLEMSON

Two undefeated teams going at the top of the ACC Atlantic going at it? It’s been a while since Syracuse could say that. Still Clemson should handle this Syracuse team as I’m sure a bit of revenge is on their mind considering Clemson lost to Syracuse last year.

  1. ARKANSAS STATE @ GEORGIA SOUTHERN

This is suddenly a huge game in the Sun Belt. If Georgia Southern can pull this off they’ll be favored in almost every other game this season. Arkansas State is 3-1 with their lone loss coming at Alabama. This one should be a fun one.

  1. TOLEDO @ FRESNO STATE

Ah a nice mid major matchup between two programs who have historically been tough group of 5 teams. Toledo is 2-1 and looking for another great season. Meanwhile Fresno State is 2-1 and looking for another 10 win season. Something has to give.

  1. NORTH CAROLINA @ MIAMI (FL)

North Carolina needs to find a way to get some wins after a rocky start against Cal and East Carolina. Miami is in the midst of a QB change. Miami should roll but UNC might be able to play the upset card.

  1. LOUISIANA TECH @ NORTH TEXAS

Louisiana Tech played LSU tough but just couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch. North Texas is thinking about a potential undefeated season after Mason Fine and company blew out Arkansas on the road. This is a huge game in the Conference.

  1. FLORIDA STATE @ LOUISVILLE

Florida State finally grabbed a win over Northern Illinois and looks to now grab their 1st conference win. Louisville much like FSU is really struggling this year but of recent they’ve had the Seminoles number. This one is a big one for both teams.

  1. USC @ ARIZONA

Clay Helton worked his magic and somehow beat Washington State last week. His seat had been hot and will be hot again if they lose to Arizona. Arizona is 2-2 and has really underachieved thus far this season. I like USC to find a way to get the win for Helton.

  1. IOWA STATE @ TCU

Both these teams had rocky starts and need a win. Both these teams are probably good football teams that should be bowling come the holidays. Something has to give.

  1. PURDUE @ NEBRASKA

Purdue is 1-3 but could easily be 4-0. Nebraska is 0-3 but could be 2-2. The fans in Lincoln want this one. This should be a fun one.

  1. PITTSBURGH @ CENTRAL FLORIDA

Central Florida normally somehow gets their power 5 matchups cancelled for Hurricanes like their recent matchups vs UNC and Georgia Tech but yes finally we have a football game against an ACC opponent. I like UCF to roll in this one.

  1. TEXAS @ KANSAS STATE

Bill Snyder sure got upset at that press conference last week and I expect Kansas State to put up a big effort this Saturday against Texas. Texas finally has this thing rolling after nice wins over USC and TCU. Must watch TV here.

  1. VIRGINIA @ NC STATE

Virginia is looking good this year with a nice 3-1 start to the season. NC State is undefeated at 3-0 and perhaps luckily avoided a home game against West Virginia that was cancelled because the hurricane. This is a big conference game.

  1. MICHIGAN @ NORTHWESTERN

I know Northwestern is just 1-2 with a home loss to Akron but sometimes they get up for games like this. Michigan is 3-1 and coming off a really nice home blowout win against Nebraska. This one though could be a trap game.

  1. VIRGINIA TECH @ DUKE

Both teams have QB’s that are probably out for the season. Duke is undefeated and looking to remain that way. Virginia Tech has rebound on their mind after an embarrassing road loss to Old Dominion.

  1. UTAH @ WASHINGTON STATE

I still don’t know how Washington State lost that game last week to USC and I’m sure Mike Leach wonders the same thing. Utah is 3-1 but the offense has struggled this year. This is a big game for both teams as conference play moves along.

  1. FLORIDA @ MISSISSIPPI STATE

Dan Mullen coming back to his old stomping grounds, I mean who wouldn’t want to watch this matchup. Miss State coming off a tough road loss at Kentucky. This is must watch tv.

  1. WEST VIRGINIA @ TEXAS TECH

West Virginia hits the road for the first time this season to take on a weird but good Texas Tech team. This game screams trap game if you are a WVU fan but man this should be a fun one to watch regardless.

  1. BYU @ WASHINGTON

BYU has been a great story and team to follow so far this season. They already pulled one gigantic upset this year can they make it two? Washington probably should be undefeated but I still have questions about Jake Browning. Washington should roll but stranger things have happened.

  1. OREGON @ CALIFORNIA

This is a huge game for the PAC 12 north. Oregon let the Stanford game slip away and they can’t afford another conference loss. Cal has been playing good football winning at BYU a few weeks back.

  1. SOUTH CAROLINA @ KENTUCKY

If Kentucky can somehow win this perhaps they could be the team that challenges Georgia most. Which is crazy considering everyone thought it would be South Carolina or Florida. Kentucky has been a great story thus far this year.

  1. STANFORD @ NOTRE DAME

Honestly, if Notre Dame can win this they have a fairly easy road to a potential undefeated season. Virginia Tech just lost their QB for the year and Florida State looks awful this year. This could be a perfect storm for the Irish.

  1. OHIO STATE @ PENN STATE

This game is suddenly becoming a must watch game each and every year. I like Ohio State in this one but these games have been wild the past two years.
